My 2020 Word

I’ve seen several posts on Instagram or Twitter asking, “what is your one word for 2020?” I believe this has now taken place of your once dedicated resolutions. People aren’t setting resolutions, they are putting one word into the universe and moving towards living by that word. I decided to try that this year; instead of making all these promises about what I may or may not do, I decided that all of the things I do end up doing will be an extension of embodying my word for the year.

I chose “Evolution”.

Evolution: descent with modification frompreexisting species : cumulative inherited change in a population of organisms through time leading to the appearance of new forms : the process by which new species or populations of living things developfrom preexisting forms throughsuccessive generations

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

What better word to define my life.

Every year I’ve been saying the things I will do, won’t do, etc.; however, I find myself justifying behaviors or actions and it makes you feel sort of guilty when you say you’re going to start/stop doing something on Jan 1 and it doesn’t happen.

This year, I felt more at ease telling myself that 2020 is about evolution; mainly evolution of self. As I was going through and clearing things out of my apartment, I realized something: there have been things I’ve written in journals about, started the research on and then stopped; and for what?! Nothing. I’ve been putting things into the atmosphere for years and because of insecurity, fear or both, I haven’t done a lot of things. I promised myself that would end. I told myself on 1/1 that this year, I’m just going to do it. If it’s going to better my life and better myself as a person, then I’m doing it. I’m fully transforming into the person I have written about for years and felt too scared to commit to being that person. That ends this year.

Evolution for me starts internally with how I see myself. These are some of the things I am going to start doing to internally evolve:

  • Give myself more credit
  • Show a little more love
  • Bring out my self-confidence
  • Don’t be afraid to take leaps

I feel like if I can do these things, the person I will evolve into by the end of 2020 will be unstoppable! And nothing is stopping me but me. I have to stop telling myself that things are impossible, because if they are being done, then that means that at some point, they were possible.

Never let anyone in this world, even yourself, tell you that something is impossible. If you work hard, dedicate the time, put forth the effort, then you can be anything and everything you desire. You only have one life; one time to do whatever you want to do to make it meaningful. Don’t waste years of your life saying “I wish I could do this or that”…nah, bump that. GO DO THAT TODAY!!!! Take a step towards living your best life (don’t just say you’re doing it and you’re really frontin’). Don’t let the days pass you by, start living up to your word at this very moment.
