Podcastin’

Do you all listen to podcasts? Last year, I would say is when I started getting real heavy into having a rotation of podcasts that I listen to on a regular basis. I don’t watch much TV outside of my ratchet Mondays, and TGIT; so I’ve been substituting listening to podcasts on some days instead of watching tv when nothing is on. When I look at my Podcast app, I’ve developed quite a healthy rotation, so I decided to do a spotlight on each of my faves for you guys! Here goes!

  • The Read

The Read is at the top of the list because it was the first podcast I came across  to start listening to when I wanted to get into podcasts.  I had heard about them on Twitter and decided to give them a shot.  That was over a year ago and I haven’t looked back.  Kid Fury and  Crissle are truly my best friends in my  head and listening to them is  like sitting around on the couch on a friday night drinking and talking about all the bullcrap that goes on in the world.  From pop culture to politics, if you want to hear a good unfiltered and unedited opinion on how they feel about something, make sure you’re downloading The Read’s episode every  Thursday.

  • The Friend Zone

Because who in the hell wants a musty brain? As soon as I found out Crissle and Fran  had friends with a podcast, I blindly subscribed to it; not knowing what I was getting into.  Little did I know I  stumbled upon another gem!  The Friend Zone is my mental escape and the place where I get ideas about my mental wellness with Fran, new music with Assante and get the recap on whatever has happened on tv that week with Dustin. Fran, Dustin and Assante are just what I need to get a good laugh in when I’m having a rough week and will clue you into some amazing perspective about life that you never thought about.

  • Gettin’ Grown

When Gettin’ Grown came out and I heard the concept, I thought, “this is EXACTLY what I need to be listening to!” Gettin’ Grown is your weekly sit down at the kitchen table with Jade and Keia, as we discuss the struggle through this thing we call adulting, and how many of us are barely getting it right! Despite the hurdles, Jade and Keia are there every week to give advice and personal experience on how to get us through.  They highlight people who own their own businesses or who are out  here slayin’ life, we  sit down  at the kitchen table  for some  real life discussion, have a good laugh at some of the petty peeves  in our lives and even highlight  some of our  favorite self-care techniques!  Gettin’ Grown is a podcast that everyone who has crossed into the adulting  threshhold needs to  listen to just to know that you aren’t  the only one  who has a hard time getting  life all the way together!

  • Jade and XD

Jade and XD is my random podcast.  There is usually a topic with Jade and XD, but  most times, I listen to them because a lot of it feels very sporadic and feels like random Friday night conversation after a long and  exhausting week at work.  It feels like you can pull up to the mic with them, pour up a drink and join the conversation.

  • Levar Burton Reads

I just recently started listening to Levar Burton Reads after listening to an episode of The Read in which  he was a guest on and he talked about his podcast.  I decided to check it out for a couple reasons; 1) I wanted to expand the genre of  stories I was into, 2) I am trying to get into this audiobook thing and what better way to start than through a podcast dedicated to listening to Levar Burton read stories?!

  • hey, girl

hey, girl  is  a podcast that I listen to to weekly sometimes as my self-care.  The podcast is made up of different interviews conducted by alex elle with different  women  from  all w alks of life.  Each woman sits down and  discusses a different topic;  from  divorce,  to m ental h ealth,  to activism, to trying to conceive.  These women have chosen to open up and have some of the tough conversations and open up like you wouldn’t believe.

These are the top 6  podcasts I am in love with right now, and probably won’t ever stop listening to!

What about you guys, what podcasts do you all listen to?? Leave a comment and let me know!!

Self-Care Sunday Highlight: Music

This week’s highlight for self-care is one of my personal favorites: music.

Music is one of the most therapeutic things I utilize in my day-to-day life.  I can pretty much listen to any type of music, as long as it gives me good feeling vibes.  I have always loved music and the benefits it has on uplifting me to another place.  I have different playlists, and when I’m feeling a certain way, or looking to put myself in a certain mood, I lean on that specific playlist and it always helps me feel better.

Music is known to bring about the most powerful emotions and feelings when you listen to it.  I listened to a podcast once, where they described that the most pivotal moments in songs could release dopamine into the system.

Here are some of the ways that music can positively change your life:

  • Music is a method of therapy for depression
  • Music helps to reduce anxiety and calm you down
  • Music can help improve your motivation and concentration
  • Music is an overall mood stimulant.
  • Music boosts performance in activities (working, running, exercising, etc.)

This week, I challenge you to put together a playlist of your favorite songs; some of the songs that put you on cloud 9 and bring happiness to your day.  Use that playlist when you’re feeling down or not your usual self, and see if it helps bring you to a better place!!

The Christmas Tag!!!

“Chestnuts roasting, on an open fire……” 🙂

So, today I’m feeling real holly and jolly today (possibly because of the Christmas  party we are having at work today).  As an extension of my holiday cheer, I am going to do the Christmas tag for you all!  I will have the questions down at the bottom of the post for anyone else who wants to do this!!  So, lets get it!!

  1. What is your favourite Christmas Movie/s?

My favorite Christmas movie…?  Actually, Nothing Like the Holidays is my favorite Christmas movie.   I don’t know how I stumbled upon  this movie a couple years ago, but ever since,  I HAVE to watch it at least 3 times during the Christmas holidays!  My favorite line?

“I’M NOT GONNA RUN THE BODEGA!”

LOL.

  1. Do you open your presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?

Christmas morning!  And I am definitely someone who will be up at the crack of dawn (even before my own toddler), ready to open gifts.  Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays, and now that I am a mother.  I am enjoying more of watching my daughter and nephew open their gifts and see the joy on their faces for the holiday.

  1. Do you have a favourite Christmas memory?

There is a video of my daughter and my nephew’s first Christmas, where they were wearing matching onesies.  My nephew was playing drums, and my daughter was dancing.  It was classic Kynn and Preston, and I loved it.  I think that is the year we knew they completely enjoyed their Christmas.

  1. Favourite festive food?

I LOVE turkey and dressing, with cranberry sauce and giblet gravy.  That is my all time favorite combination at holiday time.  That and apple pie for dessert.  And let’s not forget the wine 🙂 ….

  1. Favourite Christmas gift?

I don’t know if I have a favorite Christmas gift.  What I enjoy the most is when someone gets me something that they KNOW I will love; or if they take the time to get me something that I specifically asked for or casually mentioned in passing conversation.  Thoughtful gifts  are the way to my heart.

  1. Favourite Christmas scent?

Ehh, I don’t have a specific scent, but I know when I start to smell cinammon, apple or vanilla type scents,  I am knee deep into the holiday season!

  1. Do you have any Christmas Eve traditions?

No Christmas Eve traditions, although I would like to develop one for my daughter.  I know she will want to make cookies for Santa and write a note.  I also may let her open one gift the night before. 🙂

  1. What tops your tree?

Right now, a star.  I want to get a really pretty angel like my grandmother has on the top of her tree.  It’s gorgeous!

  1. As a kid what was the one (crazy, wild, extravagant) gift you always asked for but never received?

I’d have to say I was pretty blessed.  I can’t think of anything I asked for that I never got for Christmas or at one point in my life. I also have gotten older and don’t ask for much; Im in a season in my life where I’d rather give than receive.

  1. What’s the best part about Christmas for you?

Spending time with my family and friends. Period.  I have always loved Christmas because I knew that  was the one holiday of the year that everyone will come together for a day and be joyful and laugh and have fun.  As everyone has grown, we have  all made our own new traditions, but one thing that I will never  give up is  having the ones I love the most with me on Christmas.

Here are the question for you to answer.

  1. What is your favourite Christmas Movie/s?
  2. Do you open your presents on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?
  3. Do you have a favourite Christmas memory?
  4. Favourite festive food?
  5. Favourite Christmas gift?
  6. Favourite Christmas scent?
  7. Do you have any Christmas Eve traditions?
  8. What tops your tree?
  9. As a kid what was the one (crazy, wild, extravagant) gift you always asked for but never received?
  10. What’s the best part about Christmas for you?

5 Energy Shifting Techniques

If you have followed me, then you know that I have been making concerted efforts to balance my self-care and making it the top priority.  I was listening to a podcasts, and the topic of energy shifting was discussed.  I gave myself a little homework/reflective thinking assignment to think of 5 things that I use to help me shift my energy from negative to positive.  After a few minutes of really narrowing it down, I came up with the following techniques:

  1. Speak to yourself positively:  My day is not worth anything if I don’t try to say at least 1 positive thing about  life or myself  in the morning.  Sometimes, I cannot get out of bed until I tell myself that “things will not be bad” that day.
  2. Music: I could be having the absolute WORST day ever, and I could run to my TIDAL app, put on some music, and it LITERALLY changes my entire mood.  If I ever had to live my life without this specific outlet, I would probably in a horrible place.
  3. Movement: Exercise is crucial.  Movement is key.  Being in a job where I sit at a desk all day, it becomes very easy to forget to stand up at minimum.
  4. Shower: Who doesn’t  love a good shower?  I have taken showers to a whole different level these days; all with a little thing called exfoliation as well.  Nothing better than washing a bad day and negativity away with a steaming hot shower!!
  5. Kynnedy: This person is last; however, certainly not least.  My daughter is one of my favorite energy shifters,  because watching her grow and evolve is truly  breathtaking.  She is mature way beyond her 2 years, and she is very independent.  As much as her actions sometimes frustrate me a little, I can’t help but be in awe at how much she is growing into her own.  Seeing her face and hearing her yell “IT’S MY MOMMY!” and runs up to me and hugs me after her day at daycare, will wipe away any negativity that happened in that day.  She is my best gem.

I would love to hear from you guys! I shared my 5 favorite energy shifting techniques, what are yours?  Comment below!

Coloring Book

So…I just recently gave Chance the Rapper a listen..(definitely behind the wave, but don’t crucify me ladies and gents lol).  I’ll admit, I haven’t really listened to Chance the Rapper before, so I will say I’m behind the game on him, but with all the good things I’ve heard so far, I finally decided to take some time out and listen to his latest project, Coloring Book.
