Confessions of a Loc’d Goddess: Freeforming/Semi-freeforming…Is it for you?

There are several questions to ask yourself when you are starting your loc journey.  As I was researching locs, I noticed several crowns that were freeformed or semi-freeformed, which I actually admired.  It made me wonder if I would ever make the decision to freeform or semi-freeform my locs.

When you freeform, you are basically letting your locs grow, with no intentions of retwisting.  Some feel that it is truly letting your hair be natural, with no manipulation or products.  You just wash your hair and go!

The other side of that is semi-freeforming, which means that you let your hair grow, and retwist less and less often.  You wash your hair regularly and everything, but just do not retwist.  I have seen people who state they only retwist their hair anywhere from 2-4 times a year!

I have considered semi-freeforming my hair for a long time (since I was about 6 months in).  Based on the fact that I retwist my own locs, sometimes the process to wash and retwist becomes tedious for me.  There have been plenty times when I just wanted to let my hair go and do what it feels like doing for a couple months, and then retwisting (to be honest, this is what I have been doing for the last couple weeks).

I am attempting somewhat of a “semi-freeform trial phase” if you will.  So far, it has been a couple weeks since I have retwisted.  I have to wash my hair and I am probably going to see how my hair looks if I don’t retwist it.  I have to keep in mind that I have a dress code, which does include hair.  So far I have not had any issues regarding my hair, but I do know what kind of job I have, and being in the community quite often will require me to reflect that agency in the best way possible.  So I have to make sure that I can make my hair look professional if needed for work.

I think I am going to try to semi-freeform for a while, just to give myself time to rest between retwists.

We shall see how this turns out!

I’ve been loc’d for six years now and I actually semi-free form. But it wasn’t a conscious decision really, I’m just lazy with my hair! lol. I wash only about every two weeks, keep it oiled and retwist about every three months. As a result I have discovered tremendous growth. My hair is the longest and healthiest its every been. It seems the less I bother it the better it performs. I do love the fresh look though and think truly its a personal choice. But goodness don’t I love NOT doing my hair…yesss. 🙂

I believe you will like this website, if you already are not familiar with it. http://www.naturallycurly.com/?utm_source=nc_newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=curlmail_logo. I have found a lot of good tips about curly hair and the right products to use. I am a white chick with curly hair. I straightened it for 10+ years and went back to the curls about 6 mos ago. It has finally transitioned to healthy curls. Best thing I ever did as my hair was becoming dry and fragile. Let me know what you think.:)
